Cool Mother’s Day Gifts

Have you noticed that most Mother’s Day gifts are boring?  Moms can be young, cool and conscious too, why are you trying to give them a pepper shaker? Here is a list of products I found for young (or not so young) moms who like getting useful and fun things, most importantly, these are great for all year around, not just mother’s day. I hope this helps you answer the question of what to give to all the moms you love.

This Mother’s Day Give the Gift of Time Roomba and Mikey | Mother's Day Gift Guide | Fashionhedge

Do you like cleaning?

I am not one to love cleaning, as a matter of fact, I will trade cleaning for pretty much anything else, put simply: I hate cleaning. A lot. But I do enjoy the atmosphere of a clean and organized space. While organization remains somewhat of a challenge for me, there was one thing that changed my life  and that I can imagine doing the same for most people.

We got Mikey, our border collie puppy about a year ago and shortly after decided to get a cleaning device that we had heard many good things about, our friends had one and since they got it, their house became dog hair free. Dogs shed a lot sometimes and trying to keep a carpet clean  when you have one of those furry creatures is practically impossible. So, we went to Costco and got a Roomba! Since then, our house is way cleaner and we discovered that there was more dirt than we could have imagined.

Why didn’t we just vacuum every once in a while, you may ask?  Because our time is more valuable spent somewhere else, neither of us wants to make the time for cleaning so frequently when there are so many projects on the queue and work is busy. I hate the “I don’t have time” excuse because really, if you want to do something, you will find the time, instead this is a “we chose not to do it”.

We had vacuumed exactly zero times since we moved in (we’re just not into vacuuming), but the amount of dust and hair that our little friend was able to pick up was surprising. It took at least three full trips before the dust compartment started looking less full after it was done, that first time was an eye opener to how much dust can get accumulated in carpets and tow dirty we really were. Knowing that we were breathing in all that dust on a daily basis and that the carpet that we lay on so frequently was super dusty was not fun, but hey, now we have help!

How Roomba works

Roomba is a robot equipped to vacuum different types of floors, guiding itself through a predefined path and adjusting its movement via motion and cliff detection sensors. So, if you have stairs, it won’t fall off and when it finds something in its way, it will change trajectory. Basically, all you have to do is press the button and let it do  its job, it will even find its parking spot back to the charging station. It can get stuck sometimes if there is stuff lying on the floor that could get tangled in the robots’ spinners, but it doesn’t happen very often.

Our model can clean a large front room, the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen  in one charge and it takes around 30 minutes. We run it at least 2 times a day to try to get all of the extra fur and you can clearly see the difference.

Why is this a great Mother’s day gift?

Because this thing simply saves time, you can even schedule it to run automatically everyday at a certain time, so you don’t even have to go through the pain of pressing a button. I know giving appliances for Mother’s day is not appreciated by some moms, but I highly doubt that would be the case with this one. And, if in fact the mom in question is in charge of some of the cleaning, you are not giving her another appliance, you are giving her time. Not to mention the health benefits of breathing cleaner air and having a clean floor, specially if you have kids.

We are giving one of these beauties to my mother in law, we already gave one to my sister in law and both her and her husband loved it, so we figured it’s kind of a safe gift, particularly loved by those who have pets and have more important things to do.

Note: the model shown in the video is not available anymore, only superior versions, I know, what a drag.
