The worst Spring 2015 fashion trends

Unpractical, transitory or just plain ugly, here are our picks for the worst Spring 2015 trends taken from the major ones found by Google on their fashion trends report. We already know that seasonal trends are just another way to sell us more stuff, but that becomes even more apparent when different magazines try to push certain products for a couple years in a row (i.e: culottes). For spring, I am wearing just pretty things, no trends, what are you wearing this spring? Is any of these on your shopping list?

The culotte

“I want to look bigger, shorter and like I’m wearing a skirt, except it’s not feminine at all”. You got it, this item is being pushed down our throats as a Spring essential when nobody should ever wear it. Some styles are better than others, but ultimately, the wide leg and loose fit of the horrible culotte makes it impossible for anyone that’s not at least 5’8″ and 110 lbs to look good in it. I don’t really know why, but the work “platypus” comes to mind whenever I see a woman wearing one of these. Personally, I would avoid it at all cost because:

  • the elongating effect of the high-waist cut gets gets cancelled by the shorter length of the leg, and
  • because I am not interested in my lower body looking disproportionately wide

Good luck trying to sell those to average women!

* Editor’s note: in Spanish, culote means big butt.

Tulle skirts

I never really had ballerina aspirations when I was younger, today there is still no good reason to buy anything involving tulle and I partly blame Carrie Bradshaw for making women think tulle skirts are acceptable. I don’t have anything against fluffy tulle skirts, I’m just not sure it’s something I would want to wear ten years from now or wear to work on a Friday. Do you know what I mean? Fashion photo shoots with midi tulle skirts look great and they definitely create a look on their own, but I am putting this one on the “looks good on Vogue but not good for me” category. In one word: unpractical.

Emoji jogger pants

I am not going to deny the comfort and versatility of sweatpants, I do wear them a lot for hiking and working out in general, and having a good pair or two has become essential for most of us. Having said that, I haven’t bought a pair in a few years, since the once I have have lasted long enough and still going strong. I prefer upgrading other items that I wear more often rather than having multiple fairly standard workout clothes. This is why the idea of emoji sweatpants makes me shiver a little.

Yes, we understand you are a millennial and are obsessed with your iOS device (because those emojis are the iOS, not the Android kind), but there are better ways of showing the world your take on modern technology and Apple knowledge:

  • Learning to code
  • Developing an app
  • Buying Apple  stock

By the way, if you are looking for good sweatpants, ethically sourced and eco-friendly, Alternative Apparel has cool and timeless cute ones.

Other trends according to Google are: midi skirts (which I think are ok and blame Kim Kardashian for) sweater dresses, sweatshirts, high waisted shorts (♥), flannel shirts (thumbs down) and boyfriend jeans (look out for my boyfriend jeans editorial soon!). All of those are more versatile pieces and can be bought secondhand.
