Clean Silk
Previously on fashionhedge, I talked about Peace Silk, or Ahimsa Silk, a type of silk obtained without causing harm to the silkworm, unlike traditional silk extraction processes. But there is more to the silk production process than animal cruelty. Toxic dyes, high carbon emissions, and water-intensive procedures are some of the environmental issues in the silk production chain.
Everlane has, once again, set out to change the paradigm and discovered more eco-friendly and sustainable ways to manufacture silk. Clean Silk is made at a Bluesign®-Certified Dyehouse, which means they have proven that around 900 potentially harmful chemicals have been eliminated from the production process. The factory also complies with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, where factories have to provide evidence of reduced energy consumption across all aspects of the operation.
This silk is not Ahimsa, but the company has a roadmap to include “regenerative organic farming” by 2020 (would this mean cruelty-free? Only time will tell).
The best silk to buy is vintage silk. If you can’t find what you are looking for, Everlane Clean Silk is your next best option. Luxe basics are never off-trend.
